Single trip travel insurance is best suited to those people who take one main holiday a year, or who only travel once in a while. In most cases, a single trip policy allows you to choose the exact type of cover you consider necessary and the length of time for which you wish to be insured. This means that you can design the insurance policy to suit you. Most insurers will allow you to choose the exact number of days' worth of cover you need, which means that you do not pay for extra days, whilst some insurers will allow you to remove areas of cover which you consider unnecessary, and by so doing reduce your premium. Many insurers will give you the option of buying either individual cover for yourself, or group cover for your family or a group of friends.
In general, the cost of a single trip policy is around a third of that of annual multi-trip insurance, which means that unless you take three or more trips during the year, single trip insurance is usually the least expensive option. This is especially true if you are over sixty-five years of age, because many insurers will charge older people higher premiums for multi-trip insurance.
Single trip travel insurance can usually be taken out for up to one hundred and eighty days. If you are planning to take a longer holiday you may wish to consider 'backpacker insurance' or 'extended trip insurance', which can offer up to eighteen months' worth of cover in one policy.
The amount of cover you receive varies between policies and insurance providers, but most policies will feature the same basic exclusions, such as if you take a holiday in a war-zone and are injured as a result. For more information about the typical exclusions that apply to a your travel insurance policy see Exclusions.
